Thingyan, also known as the Myanmar Water Festival, is one of the grandest and most vibrant festivals celebrated in Myanmar (Burma). The word “Thingyan” is derived from the Sanskrit word Sankranti, meaning the movement of the sun from one zodiac sign to another.

History and Significance

Thingyan has deep Hindu and Buddhist origins, linked to the story of Arsi, the king of Brahmas, who lost a bet with the king of the celestial devas. Arsi was beheaded, and his head was passed from one goddess to another every year to prevent disaster. This story became the mythological basis for the annual festival that celebrates the cosmic transition and renewal of time.

Note: Elders are usually sprinkled gently, while younger participants engage in energetic water fights.

2. Pandals and Music Performances

Temporary platforms called “pandals” (mandats) are erected with music, dance, and free food. Youths perform traditional songs, pop music, and traditional dance-dramas. Community groups and local celebrities often participate.

3. Offering Food and Monastic Alms

On Thingyan Eve and New Year’s Day, many prepare and donate traditional Burmese dishes like:

Mont Lone Yay Paw (sweet glutinous rice balls)
Mohinga (rice noodle soup)
Thingyan Hta-Min (special rice with mango pickle)

People also offer alms, flowers, and robes to monks and visit pagodas and monasteries for meditation and merit-making.

4. Hair-Washing and Release of Fish

Hair-washing ceremonies using traditional herbal shampoos are conducted for purification.
Fish and birds are released back into lakes or forests as an act of compassion.
