Nidhi Tewari Appointed as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s New Private Secretary
New Delhi, March 29, 2025 – In a significant appointment, Nidhi Tewari, a 2014-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), has been named as the new Private Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Currently serving as the Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Ms. Tewari will take on her new role at Level 12 of the pay matrix, as per an official order from the Ministry of Personnel.
The Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) announced her appointment on March 29, stating that her tenure will be co-terminus with her current position or will continue until further orders.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Ms. Nidhi Tewari, IFS (2014), currently serving as Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, in Level 12 of the pay matrix with immediate effect, on a co-terminus basis or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” read the official statement from the Ministry of Personnel.
Background and Career Achievements
Ms. Tewari hails from Mehmurganj in Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Modi since 2014. Before joining the Indian Foreign Service, she served as Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi.
Her remarkable journey began when she secured the 96th rank in the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) examination, leading to her induction into the IFS in 2014. Before her tenure at the PMO, she worked in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division of the Ministry of External Affairs.
Ms. Tewari joined the Prime Minister’s Office in 2022 as an Under Secretary and was later promoted to Deputy Secretary in 2023. During her tenure, she has been a key official in the Foreign and Security division, handling crucial matters related to foreign policy, national security, and atomic energy. Her expertise in international relations was instrumental during India’s G20 Presidency, where she worked closely with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
