Difference between 2Ghz and 5GHz
The difference between 2GHz and 5GHz refers to the frequency bands used by Wi-Fi networks. 2GHz has a longer range and better penetration through walls, making it suitable for larger areas or buildings with obstacles. However, it is more prone to interference from devices like microwaves and cordless phones, as many devices use the same frequency. On the other hand, 5GHz offers faster speeds and less interference, as it’s less crowded, but its range is shorter and it doesn’t penetrate walls as well as 2GHz. Therefore, 2GHz is typically better for range, while 5GHz is ideal for higher speeds in closer proximity.
How to Force 5GHz WiFi on Windows 11
To ensure your Windows 11 PC connects exclusively to a 5GHz Wi-Fi network, follow these steps:
- Open Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Locate Your Wi-Fi Adapter:
- Expand the Network adapters section.
- Right-click your Wi-Fi adapter and choose Properties.
- Configure Preferred Band:
- Navigate to the Advanced tab.
- In the Property list, select Preferred Band.
- Set the Value to Prefer 5GHz band.
- Apply and Restart:
- Click OK to save changes.
- Restart your computer to apply the new settings.
If the Preferred Band option is unavailable, you can adjust the wireless mode:
- Access Wireless Mode Settings:
- In the Advanced tab of your Wi-Fi adapter’s properties, select Wireless Mode.
