Goddess Chandraghanta: The Warrior Form of Goddess Parvati
Origin & Navratri Worship of चन्द्रघण्टा
Goddess Chandraghanta is the married form of Goddess Parvati. After getting married to Lord Shiva, Goddess Mahagauri adorned her forehead with a half-moon (Chandra). Due to this unique adornment, Goddess Parvati became known as Goddess Chandraghanta. This form of the goddess symbolizes bravery, grace, and a warrior spirit, ready to protect her devotees from all forms of harm and evil.
Goddess Chandraghanta is worshipped on the third day of Navratri. Devotees offer prayers and perform rituals to seek her blessings for courage, peace, and protection. She is believed to remove obstacles and grant her devotees peace of mind and spiritual advancement.
It is believed that the planet Shukra (Venus) is governed by Goddess Chandraghanta. Worshipping her is said to remove the malefic effects of Shukra and bring prosperity and harmony into one’s life.
Goddess Chandraghanta mounts a fierce tigress, symbolizing her fearless and warrior nature. She wears a semi-circular moon (Chandra) on her forehead, which resembles a bell (Ghanta). Due to this, she is called Chandra-Ghanta. She is depicted with ten hands:
- In her four left hands, she carries a Trishul (Trident), Gada (Mace), Sword, and Kamandal (Water Pot), while her fifth left hand remains in the Varada Mudra (gesture of granting boons).
- In her four right hands, she holds a Lotus Flower, Arrow, Bow (Dhanush), and Japa Mala (Rosary), while her fifth right hand is in the Abhaya Mudra (gesture of fearlessness).
This form of Goddess Parvati is both peaceful and fierce, ensuring the welfare of her devotees. Though she radiates a calm and divine aura, she is always prepared for battle, wielding her weapons to protect righteousness. It is believed that the sound of the moon-bell on her forehead expels negative energies and evil spirits from her devotees’ lives.
