Goddess Kushmanda: The Fourth Form of Navadurga

Origin & Navratri Worship of कूष्माण्डा

After taking the form of Siddhidatri, Goddess Parvati started living inside the center of the Sun so that He could liberate energy to the universe. Since then, the Goddess has been known as Kushmanda. She possesses the power and capability to reside within the Sun. The glow and radiance of her body are as luminous as that of the Sun.

Goddess Kushmanda is worshipped on the fourth day of Navratri. It is believed that Goddess Kushmanda provides direction and energy to the Sun. Hence, the Sun is governed by Goddess Kushmanda.

Goddess Kushmanda rides on a lioness and is depicted with eight hands. She carries a Kamandal, Dhanush, Bada, and Kamal in her right hands, while her left hands hold an Amrit Kalash, Jap Mala, Gada, and Chakra.

Goddess Kushmanda has eight hands, and due to this, she is also known as Ashtabhuja Devi. It is believed that all the power to bestow Siddhis and Niddhis resides in her Jap Mala.

It is stated that she created the entire universe, called Brahmanda (ब्रह्माण्ड) in Sanskrit, by merely flashing a little smile. She also likes the offering of white pumpkins, known as Kushmanda (कूष्माण्ड). Due to her association with Brahmanda and Kushmanda, she is popularly known as Goddess Kushmanda.
