Origins and Significance

The Dhinga Gavar Festival derives its name from two words: “Dhinga”, meaning fun or mockery, and “Gavar”, which is a folk form of Goddess Gauri (another name for Parvati, consort of Lord Shiva). While the more widely known Gangaur Festival celebrates the divine love of Shiva and Parvati and is a solemn ritual for women seeking marital bliss, Dhinga Gavar takes a playful and unconventional route, mocking traditional norms and celebrating feminine strength.

The legend says that Parvati once playfully dressed up in different forms to amuse Shiva. This act of divine play (“Dhinga”) inspired the formation of the festival in her honor, where women dress in various avatars and take on the role of protectors and mock warriors.

What Makes Dhinga Gavar Festival Unique?

1. Women in Command

One of the most striking features of Dhinga Gavar is that only women participate in the main rituals, particularly married and widowed women. Unlike many Indian traditions that marginalize widows, this festival treats them equally, empowering them to take center stage.

2. Women as Warriors and Deities

On the night of the festival, women dress in elaborate costumes, often as goddesses, police officers, tribal warriors, bandits, or royalty. These women stand guard over 11-12 installations (murti sthals) of Dhinga Gavar set up in different areas of Jodhpur’s old city.

3. Lathi-Wielding Guardians

Each woman carries a lathi (stick) and patrols the street to protect the statue of Dhinga Gavar. It is customary for these women to playfully hit men who attempt to come close.

  • Belief: If an unmarried man is struck by a stick during this festival, it is considered auspicious and believed to enhance his chances of getting married soon.

4. Bhang Prasad

In line with Shiva traditions, the prasad distributed contains bhang (cannabis), which is taken in moderation as part of the ritual and celebration.

5. No Barriers of Caste or Creed

Dhinga Gavar celebrates equality. Women from all backgrounds, including different castes and marital statuses, participate in the rituals without discrimination.

Rituals and Celebrations

  • Murti Sthapana: Idols of Dhinga Gavar, made from gold and dressed in vibrant attire, are placed at various street corners by local communities.
  • Night Vigil: Women dress up after sunset and guard these idols throughout the night, from around 7 PM till midnight.
  • Cultural Performances: Traditional folk songs, dances, and humorous skits add to the festivities.
  • Community Participation: Families from neighborhoods in the old city actively prepare for the festival days in advance, setting up decorations and organizing refreshments for the participants and visitors.
