Thrissur Pooram is a grand Hindu temple festival held annually at the Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala. It is widely regarded as “the mother of all Poorams” for its sheer scale, cultural significance, and aesthetic spectacle.

History and Origin of Thrissur Pooram
Thrissur Pooram was introduced in the late 18th century by Raja Rama Varma, popularly known as Sakthan Thampuran, the then Maharaja of Cochin. He envisioned an inclusive and unified celebration after several temples were denied entry to the then-dominant Arattupuzha Pooram due to lateness.
To resolve the issue and provide a festival for the people of Thrissur, Sakthan Thampuran invited 10 temples from the region to participate in a unified grand event in the premises of Vadakkunnathan Temple. Thus was born Thrissur Pooram, an event that transcends religion and caste and is a powerful symbol of communal harmony and cultural pride.

This ritual marks the formal beginning of the Pooram celebrations. Flags are hoisted in participating temples including Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady.

One of the most iconic features of Thrissur Pooram is the majestic caparisoned elephants from the Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu Devaswoms. Each group showcases a procession of 15 elephants, decorated with golden headgear, ornaments, fans, and bells.

Held in front of the Vadakkunnathan Temple, Kudamattam is a ceremonial exchange of colorful umbrellas atop the elephants. The Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu teams compete by changing vibrant silk umbrellas rhythmically to traditional percussion music.
