Introduction: The Significance of Karwa Chauth
Karwa Chauth is one of the most celebrated Hindu festivals dedicated to the long life, prosperity, and safety of one’s husband. Observed mainly in North India, especially in states like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi, this day symbolizes love, devotion, and marital commitment.
Married women (and sometimes engaged women) observe a nirjala fast (without food and water) from sunrise to moonrise, praying for their husband’s well-being. The festival is celebrated on the Chaturthi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the Kartik month, falling four days after the full moon (Purnima).

बहुत समय पहले की बात है। एक ब्राह्मण के सात पुत्र और एक पुत्री थी, जिसका नाम करवा था। एक दिन करवा ने पहली बार करवा चौथ का व्रत रखा। दिनभर निर्जला व्रत रखकर वह अपने पति की दीर्घायु के लिए पूजा कर रही थी।
शाम को जब उसके भाइयों ने देखा कि वह भूखी-प्यासी बैठी है, तो उन्हें दया आई। उन्होंने जल्दी से उसे खिलाने की चाल चली। उन्होंने एक दीपक जलाकर उसे छलनी के पीछे रख दिया, जिससे ऐसा लगा जैसे चाँद निकल आया है।
करवा की भोलाभाली नज़र में यह छल सफल हुआ। उसने चाँद समझकर उस दीपक को देखा, फिर जल अर्घ्य दिया और व्रत तोड़ दिया।
लेकिन जैसे ही उसने जल पिया, उसके पति की मृत्यु हो गई। करवा रोती-चिल्लाती देवी माता के मंदिर पहुंची और उनसे अपनी गलती की क्षमा माँगी। उसकी सच्ची श्रद्धा और तप से देवी माता प्रसन्न हुईं और बोलीं,
“तू अगले वर्ष फिर वही व्रत पूरी श्रद्धा से करना, तेरा पति जीवित हो जाएगा।”
करवा ने अगले वर्ष करवा चौथ का व्रत पूरी निष्ठा और विधि-विधान से किया। देवी माँ की कृपा से उसका पति पुनः जीवित हो गया।
तब से हर वर्ष करवा चौथ का व्रत बड़ी श्रद्धा और विश्वास के साथ मनाया जाता है।

Once upon a time, there lived a Brahmin who had seven sons and one daughter named Karva. One year, Karva observed the Karwa Chauth fast for the first time. She remained without food and water the entire day, praying for the long life and prosperity of her husband.
In the evening, her brothers noticed that their sister was very weak and hungry. Out of love, but in ignorance, they decided to trick her. They climbed a nearby hill, lit a lamp, and placed it behind a sieve (chalni) so that it looked like the moon had risen.
Believing the lamp to be the moon, Karva offered arghya (water offering) to it and broke her fast. But soon after, she received the tragic news that her husband had died. Shocked and heartbroken, she rushed to the temple of Goddess Parvati and wept bitterly, begging for forgiveness and her husband’s life.
Moved by her deep devotion, Goddess Parvati appeared and said,
“Karva, you have made a mistake, but your devotion has moved me. If you observe the same fast with full faith next year, your husband will regain his life.”
Karva obeyed the divine instruction. She observed the Karwa Chauth fast again the following year with utmost devotion, and her husband came back to life.
From that day onward, women began observing the Karwa Chauth fast every year for the long life and well-being of their husbands.
Rituals and Puja Vidhi of Karwa Chauth
- Pre-Dawn Meal (Sargi):
Married women eat a special meal before sunrise, known as Sargi, prepared by their mothers-in-law. - Fasting Begins:
After sunrise, women observe a nirjala fast—neither eating nor drinking until the moonrise. - Karwa Puja (Evening):
Women dress in red or bright-colored attire, decorate their hands with mehendi, and sit together for the Karwa Chauth Katha. - Offerings:
A decorated Karwa (earthen pot) filled with water, sweets, and gifts is used during the puja. - Story Recitation:

Once the moon rises, women view it through a sieve, offer water (arghya) to the moon, and then to their husbands before breaking the fast.
