India’s IT Minister Slams Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg Over Misleading Remarks on India’s Elections
New Delhi, India – Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has taken to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg for his recent comments on India’s 2024 general elections. Zuckerberg had reportedly stated that the elections had seen a “broad decrease in trust, at least in the set incumbents and maybe in these democratic institutions overall.”
In response, Minister Vaishnaw refuted Zuckerberg’s claims, stating, “As the world’s largest democracy, India conducted the 2024 elections with over 640 million voters. People of India reaffirmed their trust in NDA led by PM @narendramodi Ji’s leadership.” He further emphasized the success of India’s democratic process and the people’s confidence in the government.
The minister’s sharp response comes amid a growing debate on the role of social media platforms in shaping public opinion and influencing electoral outcomes. Critics argue that platforms like Facebook and Instagram, owned by Meta, can be susceptible to misinformation and manipulation, potentially eroding trust in democratic institutions.
This incident highlights the increasing scrutiny faced by social media giants in their role in global politics and the importance of accurate information dissemination, especially during elections.
