Veer Bal Diwas 2025: Remembering the Supreme Sacrifice of Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh

Introduction

Veer Bal Diwas is observed every year on 26 December in India to commemorate the unparalleled courage, faith, and sacrifice of Sahibzada Zorawar Singh Ji and Sahibzada Fateh Singh Ji, the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru. In 2025, Veer Bal Diwas holds even greater relevance as India continues to honour the values of bravery, righteousness, and moral strength among its younger generations.

The day serves as a powerful reminder that true courage is not measured by age but by conviction, faith, and the willingness to stand for truth even in the face of death.

Historical Background of Veer Bal Diwas

Veer Bal Diwas is rooted in one of the most heart-wrenching yet inspiring episodes of Indian history, dating back to 1705 CE, during the Mughal rule of Aurangzeb.

After the Battle of Chamkaur, Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s family was separated while fleeing Mughal forces. His mother, Mata Gujri Ji, along with the two younger Sahibzadas—Zorawar Singh Ji (aged 9) and Fateh Singh Ji (aged 7)—were captured by the Mughal official Gangu, who later betrayed them.

They were imprisoned in the cold Thanda Burj (Cold Tower) at Sirhind during harsh winter conditions.

The Martyrdom at Sirhind

The Mughal governor of Sirhind, Wazir Khan, attempted to coerce the young Sahibzadas into converting to Islam by offering them wealth, comfort, and royal status. Despite their tender age, both Sahibzadas refused to abandon their Sikh faith.

Their unwavering resolve shocked the Mughal court. As punishment, Wazir Khan ordered the two children to be bricked alive inside a wall. When the wall collapsed due to its own weight, they were ultimately beheaded on 26 December 1705.

Mata Gujri Ji, upon hearing of her grandsons’ martyrdom, attained martyrdom herself due to shock and grief.
