Introduction: The Significance of Ahoi Mata Vrat
Ahoi Ashtami is a sacred Hindu festival observed mainly by mothers for the long life, prosperity, and good health of their children. It falls on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the Kartik month—about eight days before Diwali. On this day, mothers observe a nirjala fast (without water) and worship Ahoi Mata, who is believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Parvati, the divine mother.
This festival holds deep emotional and spiritual value. Women wake up early, draw an image of Ahoi Mata (often with seven sons or the symbolic “Sei”—hedgehog), and perform puja after sunset upon sighting the stars.

Ahoi Mata Vrat Katha in Hindi
Ahoi Mata Vrat Katha in English
Once upon a time, there was a wealthy moneylender who had seven sons and seven daughters-in-law. One of his daughters-in-law was expecting a child. On the Ashtami of Krishna Paksha in the Kartik month, she went to the forest to bring soil for renovating her house before Diwali. While digging the soil with a spade, she accidentally killed the baby of a lion (or a hedgehog, known as “Sei”).
When she realized what had happened, she was filled with deep sorrow and guilt. Soon after that incident, her pregnancy ended prematurely, and later, all her seven sons died one after another. The woman was devastated.
One day, while sharing her grief with her neighbors, she heard a divine voice (Akashvani) saying,
“O woman! You have unknowingly committed a sin by killing the cub. To atone for it, you must observe a fast on the Ashtami of Kartik Krishna Paksha and worship Ahoi Mata sincerely.”
She followed the divine guidance, drew the image of Ahoi Mata on the wall, observed the fast, and listened to the Ahoi Mata Vrat Katha with devotion. Pleased with her faith, Ahoi Mata blessed her, bringing her sons back to life.
Since then, mothers observe this fast every year with full devotion for the welfare and long life of their children.
